abuse as ‘the harmful and illegal non-medicinal use of drugs or alcohol’.
Drug
abuse usually begins in an effort to relieve some sort of pain or discomfort; this could be emotion, mental, or physical.
Many drugs do this, but only temporarily and generally when the drug wears off the pains and discomforts remain, often times worsened.

The chemical cocaine hydrochloride is commonly known as cocaine. Some users chemically process cocaine in order to remove the hydrochloride. This process is called ‘freebasing’ and makes the drug more potent. ‘Crack’ is a solid form of freebased cocaine. It is called ‘crack’ because it snaps and cracks when heated and smoked.
Traditionally, cocaine was a rich man's drug, due to the large expense of a cocaine habit. Now, crack is being sold at prices low enough that even adolescents can afford to buy it. But, this is misleading, since once a person has a crack cocaine addiction, his ‘habit’ often increases, and so does his expense.
Drugs are used in an attempt to handle pain, be it emotional or physical or both.
The person decides to use a drug or alcohol to reduce discomfort derived from the problem or pain and finds only limited relief but now assigns value to the drug.
Thus he returns to the drug or alcohol for more and more use. At best the drugs simply mask the symptoms of emotional or physical pain. As time goes on the drug or alcohol is used more and more and tolerance for the drug increased the quantity needed to achieve the same results.
Often before the person is really aware of it he now addicted and craves this relief all the time and will do whatever is necessary to obtain the drug or alcohol.
The debilitating effects of the drugs can and do create more and more mental and physical problems and pains which often leads to the use of other addictive drugs in an endless downward spiral.
